Absolutely random

I sing to my girl a lot, mostly irish and American folk songs, and at the moment her favourite is "Old Dan Tucker." She never gets tired of the images:

Old Dan Tucker was a fine old man
He washed his face in a frying pan
He combed his hair with a wagon wheel
And when he was glad he'd jump and squeal

She always wants to hear more, but there are only so many verses, and most of those are not kid-friendly -- so I make up my own:

Old Dan Tucker walked in a loop
Looking for nettles to pick for soup
Found a bunch and stuffed them in his mouth
Forgot to cook them first, and he yelled Ouch!

In completely unrelated news, the Girl has announced a bold new plan for her future: to become a farmer/astronaut /firefighter/doctor /fairy.

Sounds perfectly sensible to me. If you're farming on another planet, you'd absolutely have to be your own doctor, firefighter and fairy.

I loved that song when I was her age. My mom had a great little medley of folk songs like that she used to do.

Yes, like the song goes, my daughter IS every woman.

I am slowly discovering a wealth of old songs, both from the US and here, and learning them as I teach them.

Welcome back from vacation, by the way!
