I'm not certain, but it could have been ivy-leaved toadflax, which blossoms around this time, has those colour flowers and often covers walls here. It has an (as far as I know) unique way of propagating -- instead of spreading its seeds through wind, water or animals, it reaches a long tendril to the next crevice and plants its own seeds itself.
I am a journalist living in rural Ireland, and have written for the American Conservative, the Dallas Morning News, Front Porch Republic and other publications. I interview elderly Irish about traditional ways of life, and write a weekly column about the Long Emergency for my local newspaper.
